Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier (b. March 30, 1757 in Metz, d. June 15, 1785 in Wimereux/Pas-de-Calais) was a French chemistry and physics teacher, and one of the first pioneers of aviation.

On November 21, 1783 he made the first manned free flight in history, accompanied by the Marquis d'Arlandes. During the 25-minute flight using a Montgolfier Brothers balloon, he traveled 12 kilometers from the center of Paris to its outskirts, attaining an altitide of 3000 feet.

De Rozier died during an attempted crossing of the English Channel when his balloon exploded on June 15, 1785. Thus, he and his companion, Pierre Romain, became the first known victims of an air crash.
