Editing Requirements

Hi Sherri,

Thanks for your work on our wiki! I am really glad you are here, as this work can only be improved by people like you coming in and making contributions.

In general, we should not make changes to the honor requirements themselves, as their wording is voted on by the NAD Honors Task Force. Technically, any changes to them have to be approved by the committee. That said, I do think that all of your changes to the requirements were entirely reasonable. Unfortunately though, that is not the metric we are bound to consider.

The impetus for moving the wiki here from Wikibooks (where it was born) was to enable us to add the Investiture Achievement (IA) information. Wikibooks has a strict neutral point of view (NPOV) policy which precludes the inclusion of overtly religeous material. IA is more overtly religious than the honors, so it was not possible to develop the IA material there. When we presented the proposal to develop IA on a wiki under the auspices of the NAD, and to have our worked officially "blessed," the main concern was that the IA requirements (and by extension, the honor requirements) be made un-editable by the public. Since we did not have any IA material yet, that was done from the beginning for the IA section by putting the requirements on separate pages, protecting them from edits except by administrators, and then transcluding them into the pages where the answers are.

But since we imported the honors material from Wikibooks, this was not done for them, as its development predates the adoption of the work by the NAD. Instead, I monitor the pages regularly. Someday, I might move the requirements into their own pages, but it is a tremendous amount of work to do that, so "someday" is probably not in the near future.

Rather than changing the requirements, we should instead propose changes to them. This is done by using the "problematic requirements" template:

{{Adventist Youth Honors Answer Book/Problematic requirement
|Problem description
|Proposed wording for correcting the requirement.
}}

This does a couple of things. First, it leaves the "official" version of the requirement intact. This is important because a) the NAD Committee was very concerned about that, and b) when people compare the "official" version to the "wiki" version, they can know that the requirements we list here are the officially sanctioned version. The second thing it does is tags the honor as belonging to the Honors with problematic requirements category. When the honor committee is ready to meet, we can visit this category and have a list of all the honors we thought should have edits made to their requirements. This can then be presented to the committee for consideration, and hopefully, official approval.

There are exceptions to this for spelling and grammar. For instance, you changed "Jr." to "junior" which would not be controversial, and no one would be able to argue that it changed the meaning of the requirement. We should probably avoid making any changes to the wording however.

If you have questions or concerns about this, please share them! And thanks again for helping out. It is tremendously appreciated! --Jomegat 11:51, 24 April 2014 (EDT)
