1. Research a waterway near you. Check the following items and submit a report on the observations made.
Good health indexes:
- Abundance of small fish and aquatic insects
- Clear water and fresh smell
- Banks covered with vegetation
- Some green algae in the water (light green)
- Presence of aquatic plants
- Presence of aquatic birds (kingfisher, etc.)
- Presence of crayfish, insects under the stones, etc.
- Sandbanks covered with vegetation indicating good water level stability
Water pollution indexes:
- Presence of a large amount of dark green algae
- Banks without (or little) vegetation
- Smell of putrefaction in the water
- Foaming on the surface of the water due to the presence of detergents
- Litter in the watercourse and on the banks
- Water with too much silt
- Absence of aquatic insects and fish
- Presence of oil slicks on the surface of the water
- Warehouses or factories dumping their waste into the river
2. Organize a clean-up operation for a watercourse or a pond in your municipality or of an individual (by presenting the project to them).
