Descripción: Alcanza una longitud máxima de 42-56 cm, y tiene un cuerpo largo y cilíndrico con un hocico corto y chato, grandes ojos, dos pequeñas aletas dorsales sin espinas y una gran aleta caudal. Su color es marrón oscuro, y está cubierto por fotóforos productores de luz en su parte inferior, excepto por un «collar» oscuro alrededor de su garganta y sus hendiduras branquiales.
