1. Research a waterway near you. Check the following items and submit a report on the observations made.
Good health indexes:

  • Abundance of small fish and aquatic insects
  • Clear water and fresh smell
  • Banks covered with vegetation
  • Some green algae in the water (light green)
  • Presence of aquatic plants
  • Presence of aquatic birds (kingfisher, etc.)
  • Presence of crayfish, insects under the stones, etc.
  • Sandbanks covered with vegetation indicating good water level stability

Water pollution indexes:

  • Presence of a large amount of dark green algae
  • Banks without (or little) vegetation
  • Smell of putrefaction in the water
  • Foaming on the surface of the water due to the presence of detergents
  • Litter in the watercourse and on the banks
  • Water with too much silt
  • Absence of aquatic insects and fish
  • Presence of oil slicks on the surface of the water
  • Warehouses or factories dumping their waste into the river
