Overview
This honor teaches the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely and comfortably use a hammock as primary shelter while camping. It is designed as a natural follow-up to the Camping Skills I Honor and emphasizes safety, enjoyment, and respect for nature.
This honor equips Pathfinders with specialized outdoor skills, promotes environmental stewardship (especially tree protection and low-impact camping), encourages appreciation for cultural history, and connects the joy of sleeping suspended in nature with spiritual reflection on God as Creator and Protector. It is a fun, active honor that builds confidence in outdoor living while emphasizing safety and responsibility.
The Challenging Part
The most challenging requirement of this honor is probably this:
9. Participate in an overnight camp using your hammock as your shelter. Be sure to use accompanying equipment appropriate for the weather conditions and follow adequate safety measures. Share a short report evaluating the following:
- a. How was your overall experience?
- b. If you could go back, what would you do differently?
- c. What is a spiritual lesson you learned from this experience?
