AY Honor Ukulele Requirements
1. Explain the history of the ukulele, including where it originated, how it got its name, and how it became popular worldwide.
2. Identify the different types of ukuleles, including:
- a. Soprano
- b. Concert
- c. Tenor
- d. Baritone
- e. Optional: Bass and banjolele
3. Identify the different parts of a ukulele.
4. Demonstrate how to properly hold, tune, and care for a ukulele.
5. Name and demonstrate at least five basic chords, such as: C, G, F, D, A
6. Demonstrate the ability to switch smoothly between chords while strumming.
7. Learn and demonstrate at least two strumming patterns.
8. Learn and perform three Christian songs that use basic chords.
9. Explain how music can be used as a tool for ministry and outreach. Include at least one example from the Bible where music played a spiritual role.
10. Participate in 3 musical outreach activities using the ukulele, such as:
- a. Leading worship in Sabbath School or Pathfinder worship.
- b. Playing for a children’s story or special music at church.
- c. Play for an outreach program such as a VBS.
- d. Visiting a nursing home or hospital and playing songs.
- e. Creating a simple music video with a spiritual message.
11. Complete either A, B or C:
- a. Write or co-write a simple Christian chorus or song using at least three chords you’ve learned. Perform it for your Pathfinder group, family, or church.
- b. Using your memory gems write a simple song using at least three chords you’ve learned. Perform it for your Pathfinder group, family, or church.
- c. Design a ukulele-themed object lesson for ministry.
