Define Gem Fossicking: Explain what gem fossicking is and why it is an important and enjoyable activity. Explain a brief history of gem fossicking.
Identify Equipment: Create a list of equipment used for gem fossicking. Describe each item and tell what it is used for. The list should include at least the following:
- Small shovel or trowel
- Sieve or classifier
- Collection bags or containers
- Magnifying glass
- Field guide to gems
- Notebook and pencil
Gem Identification:

Learn to identify at least five different types of gems commonly found in your area. Describe their characteristics and how to distinguish them from other rocks and minerals.

List types of precious and semi-precious stones you could prospect for and locations you might find them in each Australian states.Describe their characteristics and how to distinguish them from other rocks and minerals.
Gems in the Bible: Look up and discuss at least two Bible verses that mention gems or precious stones. Reflect on their significance and what they can teach us.
Gem Cleaning and Preservation: Learn how to clean and preserve the gems you find. Describe the methods used to clean different types of gems and how to store them properly.
Gem Uses: Research and present to the class the various uses of gems in history and modern times. Include information on how gems are used in jewellery, industry, and as collectibles.
