Massachusetts became a state on the 6th of February 1788, the 6th state to join the Union.
3. Draw or find a picture of the following:
a. State flower
The Massachusetts state flower is the Mayflower (Epigaea repens).
b. State bird
The Massachusetts state bird is the Black-Capped Chickadee (oecile atricapillus).
c. State tree
The Massachusetts state tree is the American Elm (Ulmus americana).
d. State animal
Massachusetts does not have one offical state animal. There are several types of state symbols, though, that use animals:
The state dog: Boston Terrier
The state horse: Morgan Horse
The state marine mammal: Right Whale
e. State flag
4. Name the state song and motto.
The Massachussetts state song is "All Hail to Massachusetts", with words and music by Arthur J. Marsh. The motto is "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty).
