Note: It is very important that the papyrus plant be used for this honor. If not living in Egypt, it is possible to find it in Botanic Gardens and other institutes. In extreme cases and with similar techniques, it is possible to practice with the stalk from the banana plant.

1

What is papyrus?

2

How many uses could the plant have in ancient times?

3

Which part of the plant is used to produce paper?

4

Why is soaking the strips from the stalk important for the process of making the paper?

5

With the help of an instructor, produce a piece of papyrus with a minimum size of 20x20 cm. Prove your abilities in doing the following:

5a

Peeling the stalks

5b

Cutting the papyrus reeds in strips

5c

Soaking the strips for the necessary length of time

5d

Rolling and flattening the strips

5e

Laying out the strips in two layers perpendicular to each other

5f

Pressing the layers with linen for the necessary length of time

5g

Polishing the paper with a burnishing stone

5h

You may paint or write something meaningful over your papyrus and display it at a Pathfinder event
