Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 75-95 cm; Height: 30 cm; Weight: 18-32 kg; Identification: The Southern hairy-nosed wombat has gray-brown fur, a broad blunt head, and short muscular legs; Habitat: Semiarid and arid zones, plains, open woodlands, shrublands; Diet: Herbivore: plant material; Reproduction: After being born between September and January, the single young remains in its mother's pouch for five months and does not leave its mother for another two years; Social Structure: Wombats are solitary animals except during the mating season; Behavior: Powerful diggers, wombats will often burrow into the ground to escape the heat; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: In one tunnel made by a wombat, the diameter was so large that a child could have crawled the entire distance through it. |
