NOTE: All wakeboarders in AY sponsored wakeboarding class must wear a ski vest.
Have the Advanced Beginner’s Swimming Honor.
For tips and instruction see [[AY Honors/Swimming - Advanced Beginner|]].
1. Know and practice the following safety rules:
a. Never wakeboard at night.
b. Never wakeboard during an electrical storm.
c. Always wear a ski vest while wakeboarding.
d. Make sure the wakeboarding rope is in good condition.
e. Make sure the wakeboarding bindings are in good condition.
f. Always have a spotter and flag in the boat.
g. Stay clear of objects, such as other skiers, swimmers, tubers, docks or floating objects.
h. If you fall let go of the rope.
i. After a fall, raise a hand to indicate you are all right.
j. Do not stand in the boat while it is moving.
2. Know the following hand signals:
IMPORTANT: Always review the hand signals with all boarders, spotters and drivers before anyone gets in the water so that everyone is on the same page. You should also agree on the start signal (Yell "Go" or nod your head.)
a. Slower
Thumbs down or palm down while motioning down.
b. Speed is OK
Make the OK sign by putting your thumb and first finger together.
c. Faster
or palm up while motioning up.
d. Back to dock
Pat your head or turn finger in a circle (turning your finger in a circle means turn around, not essentially back to dock.)
e. Stop
Hand cutting across throat, as in "cut it".
f. Turn
Motion with one arm to the left or right, depending on where you want to go.
3. Put on the wakeboard by yourself. Be able to remove the wakeboard in deep water by yourself.
A required skill if you are going to be doing any wakeboarding.
4. Execute a deep-water start on the wakeboard on a full line rope.
Remember to stay in your ball and then slowly stand up, using your weight to control your left and right movement. Keep your arms straight so the line won't go slack.
5. Successfully cross both wakes and return to center without falling.
This will demonstrate you have developed reasonable basic skills in wakeboarding.
6. Do a small jump off the wake and land without falling.
The thrill of airtime! This will demonstrate you have developed reasonable basic skills in wakeboarding.
