- Cotton
A natural fiber tha gives quilts a flat finished appearance. it is also very breathable, allowing excess heat to move away from the body. It becomes softer with age and use. it is an excellent choice for wallhangings because it doesn't stretch like polyester batting Cotton batting does not beard (a problem you'll encounter with polyester batting)> Thin cotton batting works well for machine quilting.
- Polyester
A synthetic fiber which gives a puffy appearance to the finished quilt, providing warmth and loft without added weight (as is common with wool batting). Non-allergenic, and moth and mildew resistant.
- Wool
Wool batting is more expensive than cotton, and is warmer to sleep under.
- Silk
Silk batting is another natural-fiber choice. It's very easy to hand quilt and drapes nicely.
