Overview
How did people find their way around before we had GPS? With a compass and a map! These devices need no batteries, so if you have them in the wilderness (and know how to use them), they can get you home even if your phone is dead.

For this honor you will need a sighting compass like one of the ones linked to on Amazon. You will also need topographical maps which can be downloaded for free or purchased.
The Challenging Part
The most challenging requirement of this honor is probably this:
10. Prove your ability in the use of a map and/or a compass by following a one-mile (1.6 km) cross-country course with at least five given readings or control points.
3. On the field :
- a. use map and compass to navigate unfamiliar terrain without difficulty
- b. make a sight at night from a distance of about 1km
- c. go around an obstacle without deviating from your sight
- d. follow an orientation trail prepared by the chef
- e. organize an orienteering race involving sighting, coordinates and obstacle contours
