1. Be a baptized member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
The Master Guide program is open only to baptized members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The purpose of becoming a Master Guide is to become equipped to lead young people to Christ. Leading is best done by example. Getting baptized shows that a person has died to sin, has been buried, and has been resurrected into a new life as a follower of Christ.
2. Have a written recommendation from your local church board, stating that the candidate is in regular standing.
Being in "regular standing" means that the candidate is a member of an Adventist church and is not currently barred from holding a leadership position. The local church clerk can provide this recommendation.
3. Be at least 16 years of age to start the Master Guide Leadership course and at least 18 years of age at completion.
This requirement means that an individual must be at least 16 years old to begin working on the Master Guide requirements, and cannot be invested as a Master Guide until age 18. In order to get the most benefit from the program, it is recommended that the candidate spend at least a year (and two years is even better) working towards the goal of becoming a Master Guide.
4. Have a completed Basic Staff Training Certification and been involved for a minimum of one year in one of the following ministries.
a. Adventurers Ministries
Adventurers is a family-based club meant to minister to children between the ages of 3 and 9.
b. Pathfinders Ministries
Pathfinders is a club within the church meant to minister to children in grades 5-10.
*It will be helpful for a Master Guide in training to have exposure to both ministries, Adventures and Pathfinders.
One way to become involved in both is to get your local Pathfinder Club involved in Adventurer ministries. A Pathfinder club can prepare a fun event for the Adventurers to participate in, teach an Adventurer Award, or prepare a meal for them.
If you are in a Pathfinder club and wish to get involved in Adventurers, talk to you local Adventurer director and find out what needs the Pathfinders could meet.
Basic Staff Training (BST) is usually offered by the local conference. Some conferences offer this training annually, some offer it biannually, and some offer it only when asked. If you do not know when the next BST event is scheduled, ask your conference youth director.
